Facebook Stories

Where: Facebook

Role: Product Designer

Goal: Increase the number of people who share Stories, and give feedback on Stories.

Challenge: Original sharing had been declining on Facebook for several years. People felt pressure to only share their best moments. Stories and its ephemerality is what reversed this trend, and brought back sharing and app usage back to a growing pattern. However, introducing Stories to the Facebook demographic (older, more international) was a significant challenge.

Action: I was a Lead on our Future of Stories workstream, where a group of 12 designers from the team worked on what we wanted Stories on Facebook to be. That work included input from the Engineering and Product team, as well as a lot of user research. After several months of work, we delivered the four pillars for our strategy to create a great stories experience for the people we serve. I then moved to execution work in the Feedback and Messaging aspects of Stories.

Result: Stories on Facebook grew to be used by more than 500 million people, and sharing on Stories bucked the trend of less sharing to the Facebook app ecosystem, and reversed it to a growth curve once again.

Work performed: Design Strategy, Product Design (User Interface, Interaction Design, Visual Design), Prototyping, User Research, A/B Testing.
